
Know the anatomy first — it’s how you diagnose
Each head sits on its own corallite, a hard skeletal tube. From the mouth of that corallite, long tubular tentacles extend, usually tipped in a contrasting color. Between the tentacle bases and the skeleton is the part that matters most.The fleshband
The fleshband is the ring of tissue wrapping the base of the polyp head where it meets the skeleton. On a healthy torch it’s plump, evenly colored, and completely covers the top edge of the corallite. On premium morphs it carries its own distinct color — which is exactly why collectors pay for it, and why a torch photographed only with tentacles extended is a torch you should ask more questions about. The fleshband is your early warning system. Look at it every day.- Full, inflated, no skeleton visible — healthy
- Thinning, slightly translucent — something changed. Investigate now, not next week
- Pulled back with bare white skeleton at the base — active recession. Days, not weeks
- Bare skeleton gone green or hairy with algae — that tissue is gone and isn’t coming back
Reading a sick torch
Torches fail in a fairly consistent order. Learn the sequence.- Reduced extension — tentacles shorter than usual, or not opening on schedule. This is also what a perfectly healthy torch does for one to two weeks after you move it. A torch that isn’t opening does not need to be moved again. Repeatedly relocating a sulking torch is one of the most common ways people kill them. Give it two weeks in one spot before you decide the spot is wrong.
- Deflated or stringy tentacles — thin, limp, wrinkled instead of plump tubes. A real signal, not adjustment.
- Fleshband recession — skeleton showing at the base of the head. Now you’re on a clock.
- Tissue translucency — flesh thin and watery, nearly see-through.
- Bailout or sloughing — tissue detaching in sheets, or the polyp ejecting itself. A coral’s last resort.
- Brown jelly — covered below. Terminal for that head if you don’t act within hours.

Resist the urge to dose something. The order is deliberate. 1. What changed in the last two weeks? The highest-yield question and almost nobody asks it first. Corals react to change, not absolute values. New light, new schedule, fresh carbon, new GFO, a big water change, a new salt bucket, a fish added, a dosing adjustment, a heater failing. Write down everything. The answer is usually on that list. 2. Alkalinity — the trend, not the number. Alkalinity swing is the leading killer of Euphyllia. Not high alk. Not low alk. Moving alk. A torch will sit happily at 7.5 dKH forever and melt if you take it from 7.5 to 9.5 in two days trying to fix it. If you’re out of range, correct no faster than about 0.5 dKH per day. 3. Salinity — calibrate your refractometer. With actual calibration fluid, not RO/DI. A refractometer drifting by 0.002 will slowly cook a torch while every number in your logbook looks perfect. 4. Temperature swing. A tank at a steady 77°F is fine. A tank swinging 75 to 81 between lights-off and mid-afternoon is not. 5. Nutrients — and make sure they aren’t zero. Euphyllia do badly in ultra-low nutrient systems. If your test kit reads zero on nitrate or phosphate, that’s a finding, not a gold star. Torches in a stripped tank pale, thin, and recede. 6. Flow and light at the coral, not at the tank. Too much flow pins the tentacles back. Too much light browns it out defensively. 7. Attackers. Check at night with a flashlight, when sweepers are out. Look for a neighbor’s sweeper tentacles reaching your torch, fish or crabs picking at it, and boring worms at the skeleton base. This section is a deliberate exception to our Coral Acclimation & Dipping Guide →. That guide is the right protocol for almost everything you’ll buy, and you should read it first. Euphyllia — torches, hammers and frogspawn — are the one family where following it at full strength will damage the coral. We’d rather tell you plainly that our own two articles differ here, and why, than have you discover it on a torch. Dip instructions on the bottle are written for SPS — thin tissue over solid skeleton, which shrugs off a lot. A torch is a large soft fleshy polyp, and the same concentration for the same duration causes tissue damage you’ll be paying for over the next month. What changes for a torch:- Half strength, half the time. Five minutes at roughly half the labeled concentration is plenty. Many experienced reefers avoid Bayer on Euphyllia entirely — it’s harsh on this genus.
- Never baste a torch. No turkey baster, no blasting. The tissue tears, and every tear is an entry point for infection. Gentle swishing only. (This is the one step where we deliberately depart from the general guide.)
- Match temperature and salinity exactly. Not approximately.
- Rinse in clean tank water before it goes near the display.
- Inspect the skeleton and plug, not the flesh. That’s where hitchhikers ride.
- Then quarantine and observe. For a torch, two to four weeks of observation beats any dip.
Brown jelly syndrome
Keep Euphyllia long enough and you’ll see this. Know the plan before it happens — you’ll have hours, not days. What it actually is. A brown, gelatinous mass that appears on the coral and spreads visibly fast. Under a microscope it’s a soup of ciliated protozoans feeding on dead and dying tissue. The part most articles get backwards: brown jelly is almost always opportunistic. Those ciliates are colonizing tissue that was already damaged — shipping trauma, a sting from a neighbor, a chipped head, a parameter crash, a rough dip. The jelly is the undertaker, not the murderer. Treat only the jelly without finding the original injury and you’ll see it again. Treatment, starting immediately:- Get it out of the display now, before anything else. It sheds infectious material into the water column and it will find your other Euphyllia.
- Blow the jelly off in a separate container of tank water, never in the display. Gentle stream from a baster, held back from the tissue. Discard that water.
- Dip in concentrated iodine. This is the one case where a stronger, longer Euphyllia dip is justified, because the alternative is losing the head.
- Amputate. On a branching colony this is what saves it. Bone cutters, well below the affected head, through clean skeleton, with margin. Losing one head beats losing nine. Cut decisively — a timid cut that leaves infected tissue accomplishes nothing.
- Hold it in a separate tank with good flow and moderate light.
- Repeat baste and dip daily until there’s no new jelly for two consecutive days.
Parameters for torches and other Euphyllia
Stability beats perfection. Say it out loud before you dose anything.- Salinity: 1.025–1.026
- Temperature: 76–78°F
- Alkalinity: 8–9 dKH
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm
- Nitrate: 2–10 ppm · Phosphate: 0.03–0.10 ppm (not zero)
Where to place a torch
Mid rockwork, in medium indirect flow, where tentacles sway gently and extend fully without being pinned back. With serious clearance. Sweeper tentacles extend at night and reach much further than the daytime footprint suggests. Six inches of clear space minimum for a single head, a foot for a colony — and plan for where it’ll be in two years, not where it is today. Mounted securely. A torch that falls damages heads, and damaged heads are where brown jelly starts. Somewhere you’ll look at it every day, because daily fleshband observation is your entire early-warning system.Where not to place a torch
- Under a spotlight or high on the rockwork under intense LEDs — it’ll pale and brown out
- In direct powerhead flow — pinned tentacles never feed properly
- Within reach of another coral, especially another Euphyllia species. A hammer and a torch will fight. Same-species heads growing into each other is usually fine
- Next to leathers — chemical warfare, and the torch generally loses
- On open sand where a conch or hermit will bulldoze it, or where detritus settles into the fleshband
- Within reach of a wandering anemone
- Against the glass, where your scraper will hit it
- In a dead spot with no flow
Why torch corals cost what they do
Part real scarcity, part collector market. Both are true. They grow slowly. A torch adds heads at a pace measured in months. A zoa colony doubles in a season. Supply can’t expand quickly no matter what demand does. Fragging is genuinely risky. You can’t snap a torch like an Acropora branch — it means going through skeleton with bone cutters, and a bad cut can trigger recession or brown jelly and cost the whole colony. Careful fraggers cut conservatively, which keeps supply tight. Wild supply is limited and politically unstable. Stony corals are CITES Appendix II and the major source countries have repeatedly restricted or halted export. When supply stops, prices don’t come back down afterward. Growing them out is a multi-year commitment. Torches tie up tank space, light and stable chemistry for years per colony before anything is sellable. And some of it is fashion. Named morphs carry premiums set by collector demand, not by biology. A torch with an unusual fleshband color is not harder to keep than a common one. That’s a legitimate market and we sell into it — but you should know which part of the price is scarcity and which part is hype.When are you ready for a torch?
- Six months of stable running minimum, nine to twelve is better. Not “set up six months ago” — running, stocked, and stable.
- You test alkalinity on a schedule and the numbers are written down. If you only test when something looks wrong, you’re not ready.
- Alkalinity hasn’t moved more than about 0.5 dKH unintentionally in the last month.
- Nitrate and phosphate are detectable.
- You’ve kept a hammer → or a frogspawn → happy for a few months. This is the real gate. Same genus family, same care, a fraction of the money. If your hammer keeps receding, a torch will die faster and cost more.
- You have space for it to grow without touching anything.
- You have a plan for holding alkalinity steady — dosing, a reactor, or a genuinely consistent water change schedule.
