Copepods are the part of a reef tank’s ecosystem that’s easy to overlook because most of the action happens overnight, in the sand, and inside the rockwork. But a thriving pod population is quietly doing two jobs at once โ cleaning up detritus and moving nutrition from the bottom of the food chain all the way up to your fish and corals. A tank with almost no visible pod activity is missing a layer of biology that no amount of dosing or feeding fully replaces.

Phytoplankton: The Base of the Food Chain
Phytoplankton is where this entire chain starts. It’s rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and feeds directly on light and dissolved nutrients, which makes it the primary food source copepod populations breed and sustain themselves on. Some reef animals โ clams, soft corals, sponges, feather dusters, tunicates โ eat phytoplankton directly, but most stony corals get their share of it secondhand, through the copepods and other zooplankton that ate the phytoplankton first. Dosing phytoplankton isn’t just feeding your corals in that direct sense โ it’s feeding the pod population that feeds everything else.

Tigger Pods (Tigriopus californicus)
Tigger pods get their name from the orange-red striping that makes them look almost tiger-patterned, and they’re on the larger end for copepods โ up to about 3mm. Unlike most pods, they spend real time swimming through open water instead of hugging rock and sand, which makes them an easy target for planktivorous fish looking to hunt mid-water. They’re loaded with lipids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, tolerate a wide temperature range, and actually reproduce faster in warmer reef-tank conditions โ a rare case where typical reef temperatures work in the pod’s favor rather than against it.
Tisbe Copepods (Tisbe biminiensis)
Tisbe pods are small โ well under a millimeter โ and spend most of their time crawling on rock, glass, sand, and macroalgae rather than swimming, which makes them ideal live food for small mouths: gobies, wrasses, mandarins, pipefish, and filter-feeding corals. They’re extremely prolific breeders, especially in warmer, higher-salinity water, and a small starter culture can multiply into thousands within a couple of months. Beyond being food, they’re genuine detritivores, grazing on uneaten food and decaying matter, and they’ve even been observed preying on small nuisance organisms like hydroids.
Apocyclops Pods (Apocyclops panamensis)
Apocyclops sit in between the other two in behavior โ adults crawl and hide in rockwork like Tisbe, but their juveniles swim freely in the water column like tigger pods, which means they end up feeding both benthic grazers and open-water planktivores. They’re considered something of a nutritional powerhouse: high in protein, omega-3 HUFAs, and carotenoid pigments like astaxanthin, and they reproduce even faster than Tisbe or Tigriopus, tolerating an unusually wide range of salinity in the process.
Amphipods
Amphipods aren’t copepods, but they run in the same crowd โ larger crustaceans that fill a similar dual role as scavenger and live food. They graze detritus, leftover food, and dead algae out of every crevice a snail or crab can’t reach, and they’re an important live food source for pickier eaters like mandarins, dragonets, seahorses, and pipefish. Like copepods, they’re notably high in DHA and EPA (the same beneficial fatty acids found in fish oil) along with protein, making them a genuine nutritional upgrade over prepared food alone for the fish that eat them.
How the Nutrients Actually Move
The chain is simple once you see it laid out: phytoplankton captures light and nutrients and converts them into fatty acids and amino acids; copepods and amphipods eat the phytoplankton and concentrate those nutrients in their own bodies; and coral and fish eat the pods, absorbing that same omega-3 content and amino acid profile (glutamine, glycine, alanine, and aspartic acid among the most important for coral tissue and pigment production) at a much higher concentration than they’d get from phytoplankton directly. Skip the pod population and that transfer breaks down โ dosing phytoplankton into a tank with no pods to eat it just means it drifts past everything it was meant to nourish.
Why a Healthy Copepod Population Is a Health Indicator
Pods are sensitive enough to water quality that their population size tells you something real about your tank. Pods visible on the glass at night, active hunting behavior from gobies and wrasses near the rockwork, a mandarin or dragonet that’s actually finding food on its own, and a sand bed that stays cleaner between water changes are all signs of a thriving population โ and a well-balanced tank underneath it. A pod population that’s crashed or never established in the first place is worth investigating the same way a coral that stops extending its polyps is: something in water quality, feeding, or predation pressure is off. Keeping the population healthy is mostly about not working against it โ avoid medications that aren’t pod-safe when you don’t need them, dose phytoplankton regularly, and resist the urge to overstock heavy pod predators like mandarins in a tank too small to sustain a population that can keep up with them.
The Bottom Line
Phytoplankton feeds the pods, the pods feed your coral and fish, and a healthy pod population is one of the best free indicators you have of how your tank is actually doing beneath the surface. Building a Self-Sustaining Population
A single bottle of pods won’t establish a permanent population on its own โ copepods need refuge space (rubble rock, a refugium, or a deep sand bed) where they can reproduce without being hunted to zero by every fish and wrasse in the display. Dosing every 1-2 weeks for the first couple of months, ideally paired with a phytoplankton feed to give the pods something to eat, gives the population a real chance to establish before you rely on it as an ongoing food source.
