A healthy Tridacna clam will outlast most of the equipment in your tank. Get the light, placement, and a couple of defensive habits right early, and it becomes the one thing in the aquarium that never needs replacing.

Which clam is actually in your tank
Four species make up nearly everything sold in the hobby. They look similar as small frags but diverge fast in light needs, growth, and where they want to sit.

A fifth species, T. gigas, occasionally turns up in the trade as a juvenile. It is not a beginner clam and not really a home-aquarium clam at all — in the wild it can live over a century and grow past four feet across. Know what you are buying before it outgrows the tank.
Light and placement
Clams get most of their energy from zooxanthellae in the mantle, the same symbiotic algae corals rely on, so PAR at the shell is the single biggest factor in long-term health. Crocea and maxima want the top third of the tank and a solid piece of rock they can wedge into or bore against. Derasa and squamosa are more forgiving of mid-to-lower placement and are usually happiest sitting free on the sandbed, not wedged in rockwork.

Acclimate light gradually
Smaller maxima specimens in particular have thin, light-sensitive mantles and do not tolerate a jump from dim shop lighting to a bright display. Start new arrivals lower in the tank or under a shade cloth and move them up over one to two weeks, watching for even mantle extension rather than bleaching at the edges.

Water chemistry
Stable parameters matter more than perfect ones
Temperature 75–80°F · pH 8.1–8.4 · salinity 1.025–1.026 · calcium 400–450 ppm · alkalinity 8–12 dKH · magnesium 1250–1350 ppm. Clams pull calcium and alkalinity for shell growth continuously once established, so swings hurt them more than a coral that only grows in bursts.
Feeding: what light doesn’t cover
Adult clams under good PAR get the large majority of their nutrition from photosynthesis and don’t need to be fed. Juveniles under about 3 inches are a different story — they haven’t built up enough zooxanthellae density yet, and research on T. gigas found young clams can source well over half their carbon from filter-feeding on phytoplankton rather than light. If you’re keeping a small specimen, that gap needs to be covered directly.

Dose small and measured, a few times a week rather than daily, and watch nitrate and phosphate afterward. Overfeeding phytoplankton fouls water faster than it helps a clam that’s otherwise getting adequate light.
The predator every clam keeper needs to know
Pyramidellid snails are the single biggest reason new clam keepers lose animals they thought were doing fine. They’re tiny, white, conical, nocturnal, and they feed on the clam’s tissue and hemolymph rather than algae — a clam can be slowly killed by an infestation that’s nearly invisible during the day.

Manual removal at night with tweezers or a soft brush is the most reliable control. A few wrasses, particularly Halichoeres melanurus (tail-spot wrasse) and Coris gaimard juveniles, are known predators of these snails, but hobbyist results are mixed — treat a predator wrasse as a helpful addition, not a substitute for regular visual inspection.
Other threats to watch for
Angelfish, butterflyfish, and some tangs and triggerfish will pick at an extended mantle out of curiosity or hunger, not necessarily malice, but repeated nipping keeps a clam retracted and stressed. Bristleworms and small crabs can bother a clam that’s already weakened, and predatory flatworms occasionally target clams directly. A clam that gapes widely, stops extending its mantle during the day, or shows a receding mantle pulling back from the shell edge is telling you something is wrong — check for pests first, then water parameters.
How long should a clam actually live
Longevity tracks tank stability more than species. Crocea and maxima top out around 8–15 years even in good conditions; derasa and squamosa, given consistent calcium, alkalinity, and light, regularly reach 15–20. In the wild, the giant species can live a century or more — a reminder that a clam dying early is almost always an environment or pest problem, not old age.
