Walk into any fish store and you’ll find a wall of foods — flakes, pellets, frozen cubes, sheets of seaweed, bottles of live copepods. Every one of them is “fish food,” but feeding a marine tank well means matching the food to the fish. An anthias and a tang can live on the same reef and have almost nothing in common at dinner time. This guide covers what to feed the most popular marine fish, how much is actually enough, and why the most common feeding mistake in this hobby — overfeeding — quietly wrecks more reef tanks than any pest or parasite.
The golden rules of feeding marine fish
Feed what disappears in about two minutes. If food is still drifting around the tank or settling into the rockwork after a couple of minutes, you fed too much. Fish stomachs are small — a tang’s stomach is roughly the size of its eye — and anything they don’t eat becomes fertilizer for algae.
Smaller, more frequent meals beat one big one. On a reef, fish graze and pick all day long. Two or three small feedings mimic that far better than one heavy dump of food, and they keep aggression down because nobody is desperate at feeding time.
Variety is non-negotiable. No single food covers everything. A healthy rotation looks like: a quality pellet as the staple, frozen meaty foods (mysis, brine, reef blends) several times a week, seaweed for the grazers, and live foods for the specialists. Rotating foods also keeps picky eaters flexible instead of imprinted on one thing.
Thaw and rinse frozen food. A quick thaw in a cup of tank water and a strain keeps the packing juices — pure dissolved nutrients — out of your water column. Your skimmer and your nitrate test will both thank you.
Foods we stock
Anthias — the grazers that need frequency
In the wild, anthias hang in the water column picking zooplankton out of the current all day, every day. Their metabolism is built for constant small meals, not one big one. This is why so many anthias waste away in captivity on a once-a-day schedule. Feed them at least two, ideally three or more small meals daily: enriched frozen mysis, small pellets, and reef blends with copepods and fish eggs. An automatic feeder dispensing small pellets between frozen feedings is the single best upgrade for an anthias tank. If you can’t commit to multiple daily feedings, anthias are the wrong fish — it’s that simple.
Tangs & surgeonfish — herbivores first
Tangs will eagerly eat mysis and pellets, but their digestive system is designed for algae, and a meat-heavy diet shows up over time as poor color, thin bodies, and susceptibility to HLLE (head and lateral line erosion). Give them dried seaweed (nori) on a clip several times a week — daily for yellow tangs, bristletooths, and other dedicated grazers — plus herbivore pellets with spirulina. A tang working a sheet of nori for an hour is doing exactly what its body expects: long, slow grazing. Meaty foods are the treat, not the staple.
Angelfish — sponge eaters and algae pickers
Large angels (emperors, queens, French) naturally eat sponge and tunicates, and they need prepared foods that include sponge matter — look for angel-specific frozen formulas — plus a strong vegetable component. Dwarf angels (coral beauties, flames) are closer to tangs: constant rockwork pickers that want algae, spirulina-based pellets, and frozen variety. A well-fed dwarf angel is also far less likely to develop a taste for your corals and clams — many “reef safe” angels go rogue when they’re underfed.
Dragonets — why mandarins need live copepods
Mandarins and scooter blennies are the most specialized feeders on this list, and the most commonly starved fish in the hobby. A dragonet is a slow, methodical hunter: it spends all day inspecting rockwork and sand, eating hundreds to thousands of individual copepods daily. It has a tiny stomach, a fast metabolism, and — critically — most wild-caught specimens simply do not recognize flakes, pellets, or even frozen food as food. They hunt live, moving prey.
That means a dragonet needs either a large, mature tank with a thriving natural copepod population (100+ gallons with a refugium is the classic rule of thumb), or regular restocking with live copepods — Tisbe and Tigger pods are the workhorses. Seeding pods into the refugium and rockwork, where they can breed faster than the fish can hunt them, works far better than dumping them into open water at feeding time. Dose live phytoplankton to keep the pod population fed and breeding. Some captive-bred mandarins now accept frozen foods, which is a genuine game-changer — but even those do best with a pod-stocked tank as their base food supply. Wrasses — meaty foods and micro-prey
Most reef-safe wrasses (fairy, flasher, halichoeres) are carnivores that pick small crustaceans and worms off the rock all day. They’re usually easy: frozen mysis, enriched brine, and small carnivore pellets, fed twice daily. Flasher and fairy wrasses share the anthias lifestyle — water-column zooplankton pickers — so they appreciate the same frequent small meals. Halichoeres wrasses double as pest control, hunting flatworms and pyramid snails between meals. Like anthias, wrasses are active fish with fast metabolisms that do poorly on a single daily feeding.
Clownfish — the easy ones (mostly)
Clownfish are true omnivores and the least demanding fish on this list: a quality marine pellet as the staple, frozen mysis and brine a few times a week, and the occasional bit of seaweed covers them completely. Twice-daily feeding keeps them fat and happy. The one mistake clownfish owners make is the opposite of most: because clowns beg so aggressively at the glass, they con their owners into constant overfeeding. A begging clownfish is not a starving clownfish — stick to the two-minute rule.
How much is too much? The overfeeding problem
Every gram of food that enters your tank ends up somewhere. The best case is fish tissue and growth. Everything else — uneaten food, packing juice, and what passes through the fish — breaks down into ammonia, then nitrate and phosphate. Those two numbers are the throttle on nearly every nuisance in reef keeping: hair algae, cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates, cloudy water, and browned-out, irritated corals all trace back to nutrient excess, and nutrient excess almost always traces back to the food bag.
Overfeeding is sneaky because the damage lags. The extra cube of mysis today shows up as a nitrate creep over weeks and an algae film over months, by which point most people blame their lights or their salt. If your nitrate and phosphate keep climbing despite water changes, the answer is almost never a new reactor first — it’s the feeding routine. Feed smaller portions, rinse frozen food, target-feed slow eaters so food isn’t drifting into the rocks, and let your clean-up crew handle the scraps. Underfeeding is the rarer failure, but it exists — thin anthias, starving mandarins, tangs with pinched bellies. The fix is never “more food per feeding”; it’s more frequent, appropriate food for the species in question.
A simple daily routine that works
Morning: small pellet feeding (an auto feeder is perfect for this). Midday: nori on a clip for the grazers if you keep tangs or dwarf angels. Evening: one rinsed frozen feeding — rotate between mysis, enriched brine, and a quality reef blend through the week. Live copepods and phytoplankton dosed weekly if you keep dragonets, anthias, or a heavy pod-hunting lineup. Watch the two-minute rule at every feeding, and check your nitrate and phosphate monthly to confirm the routine is balanced for your bioload.
