Our Standards

We’d rather lose the sale.

If a coral isn’t ready to travel, it doesn’t travel. It stays in my system until it is, or it doesn’t go out at all. That decision costs me money most weeks and I make it anyway, because the alternative is putting a struggling animal in a box and letting it die in somebody else’s tank.

I know shops that will tell you, out loud, that once the coral leaves the building it’s the customer’s problem — pests and all. I’ve heard it to my face. I built this place to be the opposite of that.

Everything below is just the detail.

Where our animals actually come from

“Aquacultured” gets stretched to cover almost anything in this hobby. Here’s ours in plain terms, with the parts that are farm-grown and the parts that aren’t kept clearly separate.

The coral we grow

We hold Florida Aquaculture Certificate #AQ0254072 and farm in Key West — in Florida water, under natural Florida sunlight. Not under LEDs in a warehouse two thousand miles from an ocean. A coral raised in full-spectrum sun with real temperature swings is a tougher animal, and you’ll notice it when it lands in your tank.

A lot of what’s in the shop grew up on that farm — soft corals, LPS, and stony pieces alike. Not everything: we also hand-pick corals from growers we trust, and every one of those lives in our Key West systems, under our eyes, and gets conditioned before it’s ever offered for sale. We’ll always tell you which is which — just ask.

Every Florida stony coral we sell is aquacultured. That’s not a slogan, it’s Florida law — collection of stony corals, fire corals and black corals from state waters is prohibited, so there is no legal route to a wild-collected Florida stony coral. Our certificate number travels with our farm-grown product from harvest to sale. Ask any importer to show you the same paper trail.

The natives we collect

We’re not going to pretend everything here is farm-grown. We hand-collect native Florida Keys species — reef fish, invertebrates, corallimorphs, and octocorals — under a Saltwater Products License with Restricted Species and Marine Life endorsements.

That collection is legal, quota-managed, and done by hand. We take small numbers of species the state actively manages for this purpose, and we stay well inside the limits. We don’t touch the protected ones — the common Caribbean sea fans, encrusting octocorals, long-spined urchins — and we never will.

If you’d rather buy only farm-grown animals, buy our aquacultured coral and skip the rest. We’ll be glad to have your business either way. What we won’t do is blur the line between the two so you can’t tell which is which.

What we won’t do

  • We won’t ship an animal that isn’t eating, isn’t open, or is still recovering. It gets pulled from your order and you get told why.
  • Livestock only ships from our own systems. Every animal we sell has been in my water, under my lights, in front of my eyes before it goes in a box.
  • We won’t send you pests and call it your problem. If something comes in with a hitchhiker, it gets dealt with here. Our Acclimation & Dipping Guide exists because we’d rather over-prepare you than take your money and go quiet.
  • We won’t sell you the wrong animal for your tank. Six weeks in and you want an Acropora? I’m going to tell you to wait. I’d rather sell you a $30 coral that lives than a $200 coral that doesn’t.
  • We won’t photograph a coral under lighting that lies. WYSIWYG means the actual animal, shot honestly.
  • We won’t quietly substitute. If your piece isn’t right on packing day, we call you. We don’t swap in something similar and hope you don’t notice.

Who does this work

Me. I do.

I own this store and I run it. I’m testing parameters in the morning and I’m scraping glass and vacuuming the floor at eight at night, seven days a week. There’s no night crew. There’s nobody I can hand the hard call to when a colony looks off and an order is supposed to ship Tuesday.

I’m not saying that for sympathy. I’m saying it because it’s the reason the standard holds. When one person is accountable for every animal in the building, nothing gets waved through.

Don’t take our word for it

Fragbox Corals — one of Canada’s best-known reef channels — flew down and filmed four episodes here: the shop, the backyard farm, and the honest reality of running this place.

The reef we’re all borrowing from

I got into this because of the ocean, not in spite of it. Florida’s reef is in serious trouble — disease, bleaching, and a funding collapse that has gutted the programs trying to hold the line.

Reefkeepers are, oddly, some of the best-positioned people alive to care about this. You already spend money and hours keeping coral alive. You already know what a healthy colony looks like and what a dying one looks like.

Buying from us

UPS Next Day Air, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, nationwide. Free shipping on livestock orders of $349 or more. A $10 box and handling fee covers heat packs, insulated liners and breather bags. We hold shipments when weather on either end would put an animal at risk — even if that delays you a week.

Everything is covered by our Shipping & Live Arrival Guarantee, which covers condition on arrival with a four-hour claim window and a photo of the sealed bag. Read the Acclimation & Dipping Guide before your box lands.
