Acans (Acanthastrea and Micromussa — the “Acan Lords”) are prized for their thick, candy-colored fleshy polyps and endless color combinations, from rainbow and bloodshot to master-grade designer morphs. They’re hardy, encrusting, and easy to frag, making them a favorite for building a colorful low-to-mid-light reef.

Browse the full range of our LPS corals for more colorful showpieces.Acans, micromussa and lobophyllia — what the names changed toMost corals still sold as “acan” are now Micromussa lordhowensis, reclassified out of Acanthastrea some years back. The trade kept the old name. Acanthastrea proper still exists, and lobophyllia and symphyllia are the larger, fleshier relatives. For husbandry purposes they all want the same thing, so the naming matters less than it looks.Buy on polyp inflation and count. A healthy acan is puffed enough that the skeleton is invisible, with even color across every polyp. A frag where the outer polyps look deflated while the center looks fine is usually a frag cut too recently.Acan care, in numbersLight: 50–120 PAR. Low to moderate — acans bleach under SPS lighting.Flow: low and indirect.Placement: sand bed or low rock.Feeding: this is where acans pay you back. Direct feeding with small meaty food produces new heads within weeks and is the fastest way to grow a colony from a frag.Common problemsReceding between polyps. Usually too much light or flow. Move it down.Polyps deflated for days. Check for a neighbor stinging it at night, and check that nothing is settling on it.Questions we get askedHow fast do they grow? Fed regularly and placed correctly, a three-head frag becoming six to eight heads in a year is normal. Our charge is $30 and $50 respectively, so the longer the route the more of it we absorb, and past a $349 livestock subtotal there is no charge to you at all. Everything goes UPS Next Day Air on Tuesday or Wednesday out of Key West, never later in the week, so nothing risks a weekend in a warehouse.
