How to Cycle a Saltwater Reef Tank: The No-Guesswork Guide

Cycling is the least glamorous month in reef keeping and the one that decides whether the next three years go well. Here is what is actually happening in there, how to know when it is finished, and the shortcuts that genuinely work.

Every reefer who has lost a tank can usually trace it back to the same thing: they got impatient during the cycle. The rock looked fine, the water was clear, nothing appeared to be happening — so they added a clownfish. Then a cleanup crew. Then a coral. What was actually happening was nothing. And nothing is exactly what should be happening, for about a month.

What cycling actually is

You are not cleaning the water. You are farming bacteria. Fish and uneaten food produce ammonia, which is acutely toxic — it burns gills and coral tissue at concentrations well under 1 ppm. Cycling is the process of growing two populations of bacteria that convert that ammonia into something harmless, in sequence.

What a cycle looks like on a graph

If you test every couple of days and plot it, every successful cycle has the same shape: an ammonia spike that falls, a nitrite spike that rises behind it and falls later, and nitrate climbing steadily at the end.

If you never see a nitrite spike, either your cycle has not started or your rock came pre-colonized and you skipped straight to the end. Test rather than assume.

The straightforward method, start to finish

1. Decide on sand or bare bottom

A sand bed looks natural, buffers slightly, and houses a lot of beneficial life. Bare bottom is easier to keep clean and suits high-flow SPS systems. Neither is wrong. If you use sand, rinse it or buy live sand, and expect a cloudy first day either way.

tter more than looks. Dry rock is clean and pest-free but starts sterile and cycles slower. Live rock brings bacteria and biodiversity but can carry hitchhikers. A hybrid — mostly dry rock with a piece or two of live rock as a seed — is what most reefers land on, and it is a sensible default. Build the aquascape now, before the tank is full. Rearranging rock in a stocked tank is miserable and stirs up everything you have settled.

3. Fill with properly mixed saltwater

Mix to 1.025–1.026 SG using RO/DI water, and let it circulate with a powerhead for a few hours before testing. Salt mixed five minutes ago has not fully dissolved and will read wrong.

4. Add an ammonia source

Bacteria need food. Without an ammonia source you are just running a pump in salty water. Either dose bottled ammonia to around 2 ppm, or drop in a small piece of raw shrimp and let it decay. Bottled ammonia is cleaner and easier to control; the shrimp method is free and works fine if you are not squeamish.

5. Seed with bottled bacteria

This is the one genuine shortcut. Bottled nitrifying bacteria seed both colonies directly instead of waiting for them to arrive on their own, and can cut a four-week cycle to two.

6. Test every two or three days — and write it down

You are watching for the shape in the graph above. A single reading tells you nothing; the trend tells you everything. Salinity matters here too, since every other reading scales with it — a reliable salinity tester removes one variable from the puzzle.

7. Wait for the finish line

The cycle is complete when, with an ammonia source still being added, both ammonia and nitrite read zero within 24 hours. That last clause is what people skip. Zero ammonia in a tank with nothing producing ammonia proves nothing at all.

Temperature matters too. Bacteria multiply faster at 78°F than at 72°F, so keep the heater on through the cycle.

The mistakes that restart the clock

  • Adding fish early. The most expensive mistake in the hobby. An incomplete cycle plus a fish equals ammonia burn.
  • Dosing conditioners that lock up ammonia. You have just removed the bacteria’s food supply and stalled your own cycle.
  • Big water changes mid-cycle. You are diluting the very ammonia the colony needs. Leave it alone.
  • Cleaning or replacing filter media. That is where your bacteria live.
  • Panicking at the diatom bloom. The brown dusting around week three is normal and passes.
  • Trusting the clock over the test kit. “It has been four weeks” is not evidence. Zero ammonia and zero nitrite is.

After the cycle

Do a decent water change to bring nitrate down, then stock slowly. Your bacterial colony is sized to the ammonia load it has been fed. Add six fish at once and you will out-pace it and trigger a mini-cycle.
  1. Clean-up crew first. Snails and hermits handle the diatom and early algae phase. Browse our clean-up crew.
  2. One or two hardy fish next. Wait two weeks, then test again before adding more.
  3. Corals last. Start with forgiving soft corals and LPS rather than SPS — a young tank’s parameters are still settling.
Expect an ugly phase. Somewhere in the first few months you will get diatoms, then probably some hair algae or cyano. This is normal in a young system that has not yet built its full microbial community. Keep the husbandry steady, resist the urge to throw chemicals at it, and it resolves. New tanks also tend to run lower pH than established ones — worth knowing before you go chasing a number that will fix itself.
