Reef care guides: Acclimating & Quarantining Fish · What to Feed Marine Fish
Every fish here eats before it ships. That is the whole policy and it is the thing that separates a fish that settles into your tank from one that hides for a week and starves behind the rock. Nothing leaves our system until it is taking prepared food in front of us — pellets, frozen mysis, or both.
Quarantine anyway. We hold and observe, but no holding system is a substitute for your own quarantine tank. Four weeks in a bare-bottom tank with a sponge filter and a heater costs you almost nothing and protects a display that may hold thousands of dollars of coral. Ich does not arrive on a coral frag; it arrives on a fish.
Stock small to large, and slowly. A new fish added to a tank of established residents gets tested. Adding the most aggressive fish last, and adding one animal every two or three weeks rather than a shopping trip all at once, avoids most of the fighting people write to us about.
What to feed which species is covered in our species-by-species feeding guide, and the acclimation guide covers getting them in the door.
