About Trachyphyllia (Open Brain Coral)
Trachyphyllia geoffroyi — commonly known as the Open Brain Coral, Wrinkle Coral, or Rose Coral — is one of the most popular LPS corals in the hobby thanks to its fleshy, folded skeleton and huge range of color morphs. Unlike many LPS corals, Trachyphyllia is free-living: in the wild it rests unattached on sand or rubble, and it should be kept the same way in captivity rather than glued to rockwork.
Rainbow morphs, which combine multiple colors (like the teal and magenta seen here) across a single specimen, are especially sought after and command a premium over single-color pieces.
This is a large, fully expanded specimen in excellent health — actively feeding and displaying vibrant color expression.
Care Guide
Lighting: Low to Moderate — PAR 50-100. Trachyphyllia prefers shaded placement; too much light can cause bleaching or poor extension.
Flow: Low — gentle, indirect flow only. Strong flow prevents proper inflation.
Placement: Free-living on sand bed. Do not glue or wedge into rockwork — allow it to rest naturally on the substrate.
Feeding: Feed meaty foods (mysis, Reef-Roids, LPS pellets) 2-3 times per week. Target feeding recommended for best growth and color.
Aggression: Low to Moderate — has sweeper tentacles at night; maintain 3-4″ of space from neighboring corals.
