Description

You are buying the exact coral in the photo, shot under blue spectrum reef lighting. This Kryptonite Jawbreaker sits on a dark teal-to-navy base with electric lime-green speckling scattered across the disc in tight clusters and long trailing runs. A raised secondary bud sits toward the lower right of the disc, ringed in the same green. The contrast between the near-black tissue and the green flecking is what earns the Kryptonite name. About Jawbreaker Mushrooms (Discosoma spp.)

Jawbreakers are the pattern-chasers of the mushroom world — named for the speckled, candy-like mottling that breaks a single disc into dozens of separate colour fields. Unlike most Discosoma, no two are alike, which is why they are almost always sold as single named specimens rather than by the frag. They are slow growers by mushroom standards, and a disc this size represents real time in a stable system. Undemanding to keep, difficult to find, and one of the few corals that rewards a low-light corner of the tank.

Care Guide

Straightforward to keep. Low light and gentle flow hold the green speckling; strong light washes it out.

• Lighting: Low to medium — PAR 50–150. Jawbreakers hold their pattern best under moderate blue-heavy light; too much intensity flattens the contrast and can bleach the base.
• Flow: Low — enough to keep detritus off the disc, never enough to fold it.
• Placement: Sandbed or shaded lower rock. Give it a spot it can attach to and leave it alone.
• Feeding: Low — photosynthetic, but takes finely minced meaty food or a pellet dropped on the disc once or twice a week.
• Aggression: Peaceful. No sweepers, though a large mushroom will shade whatever sits beneath it.
• Water Parameters: Temp 76–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026, Alk 8–9 dKH, Ca 420–440, Mg 1300–1400. Stability matters more than exact numbers.
