Description

One Serpent Starfish, hand-collected and quarantined right here in Key West. Photographed under blue spectrum reef lighting, this specimen shows the smooth central disc and five long, banded, spine-fringed arms that give serpent stars their name — already out working the sandbed for scraps.

About the Serpent Starfish

Serpent stars are among the most useful and least demanding animals you can add to an established reef. Unlike true sea stars, they move on flexible, snake-like arms rather than tube feet, which lets them slip deep into rockwork and under the sandbed to reach detritus nothing else can. They are nocturnal scavengers, spending the day tucked away with just an arm tip showing and emerging at night to clear uneaten food, decaying matter, and organic waste before it fouls the water. Reef safe and long-lived, a single serpent star quietly does the cleanup work of an entire crew.

Care Guide

Hardy, undemanding, and one of the best detritus controls available for a mature tank.

  • Lighting: Not light-dependent; prefers shaded caves and overhangs during the day.
  • Flow: Low to moderate.
  • Placement: Sandbed and rockwork; it will find its own hiding spot within a day.
  • Feeding/Nutrients: Scavenges detritus and leftover food; supplement with sinking pellets or a chunk of frozen seafood weekly in very clean systems.
  • Aggression/Reef Safe: Reef safe — will not bother corals. Avoid the large green brittle star (Ophiarachna incrassata), which does hunt fish; this species does not.
  • Water Parameters: Stable reef parameters required — Temp 76-78°F, pH 8.1-8.4, Salinity 1.024-1.026. Very sensitive to rapid salinity swings and copper-based medications. Acclimate slowly by drip.
