Description

You are buying the exact coral in the photo — an Ultra Rainbow Symphyllia photographed under blue spectrum reef lighting. The valleys run a saturated raspberry-magenta flecked with teal bubble-tipped tissue, and every wall and ridge is outlined in a hard neon-green and mandarin-orange piping that traces the maze from edge to edge. The outer skirt fades toward apricot where the tissue thins over the skeleton. About Rainbow Symphyllia (Lobophyllia / Symphyllia sp.)

Symphyllia — now folded into the genus Lobophyllia by current taxonomy, though the hobby still uses the older name — is the meandering, brain-like cousin of the lobo and the scoly. What sets a true rainbow apart is multi-band contrast: not just a colored wall against a colored valley, but three or more distinct pigments stacked across a single ridge, which is what you see here. Wild rainbow Symphyllia are collection-limited and usually arrive with damaged margins from being chiseled off the reef. This colony was grown out in Key West on stable parameters, so the tissue is intact all the way around and the color is what the coral actually holds long term rather than a stress response that fades.

Care Guide

Forgiving and slow-growing — the kind of centerpiece that rewards patience and heavy feeding rather than intense light.

• Lighting: Low to medium — PAR 50–150. High light will bleach out the rainbow banding; keep it modest and let the pigments do the work.
• Flow: Low to moderate — gentle, indirect movement to keep detritus off the tissue.
• Placement: Sandbed or lower rockwork, on a flat surface where it can sit level.
• Feeding: High — meaty foods. Mysis, chopped krill, or LPS pellets two or three times a week drive both growth and color.
• Aggression: Semi — it will extend feeder tentacles at night. Leave a few inches between it and its neighbors.
• Water Parameters: Temp 76–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026, Alk 8–9 dKH, Ca 420–440, Mg 1300–1400. Stability matters more than exact numbers.
