Euphyllia — torches, hammers and frogspawn — are forgiving on water chemistry but aggressive, and they need space from their neighbors. Acans, blastos and lobophyllia are slower, hungrier and reward direct feeding with visible new heads within a couple of months. Scolymia and the other single-polyp brains are collector pieces that want low light, low flow and a spot on the sand where nothing will fall on them.Most LPS sit in the 50 to 150 PAR range with low to moderate flow, which means the lower third of the rockwork and the sand bed in a typical reef tank. Alkalinity stability matters more than the number itself: a tank that holds 8.5 dKH steady will grow LPS better than one that swings between 7 and 10 chasing a target.When you are comparing pieces, look for full tissue extension over the whole skeleton, no receding flesh at the edges, and no bare white patches between heads.
