You paid $35 for a frag with six polyps. It arrived closed. Day three it was still closed. Day six the flesh pulled back off one side of the plug, and by the end of the week you were looking at a bare skeleton with a little algae starting on it.
Most reefers read that and think they did something wrong. Alkalinity, flow, light, acclimation, the dip they skipped or the dip they did too hard. Sometimes that is exactly what happened and this article will not help you.
But a lot of the time the coral was already dying when it shipped, and it had been dying for weeks, in four different buildings, before anyone put a price on it.
This is about that. Not about spending more for its own sake. About what the price of a coral is actually buying, and why the cheapest one on the page is often the one that costs you the most.
Nobody sells you a coral. They sell you the last link of a chain.
A wild-collected coral in a US tank has usually been through something like this:
A diver takes it off a reef. It goes into a holding pen or a shore-side vat, sometimes for days, waiting for enough animals to fill an order. It moves to an exporter’s facility, which is a room full of vats under fluorescent light with the water turned over hard and nothing fed to anything, because feeding costs money and fouls water in a system that is about to be emptied anyway. It gets bagged. It flies. It clears an importer. It sits in a wholesaler’s rack under whatever light that rack has. Then it gets bought by a shop, driven or flown again, and put in a display tank with a price on it.
Each of those steps is a day or three in a bag or a bare vat. None of them are feeding it. Most of them have no idea what it looked like when it came off the reef.

The losses happen where you cannot see them
Here is the part the trade does not advertise, and it is worth being precise about the evidence rather than waving at it.
The clearest published measurement of supply-chain loss in this industry followed marine invertebrates out of Papua New Guinea over 160 days and counted what happened to 13,299 animals between the water and the plane. 38.6% of the catch was lost before it ever left the country. Of the animals that passed quality control, 30.6% died in transit to the export facility or while being held there.
And the number that matters most: 0.3% died during the international flight.
Read those two together. The flight, the part everybody worries about, killed almost nothing. The holding killed nearly a third. The authors put it plainly: low mortality during international transit masks large losses along the supply chain before export.
You never see the 38.6%. You see the survivors on a wholesale list, and the survivors are cheap because the ones that died are already written off against the price of the ones that lived.
Then it gets cut up
A colony that arrives stressed but alive has a decision made about it. Grow it out, which takes months of light and food and space, or cut it into eight frags today and sell them this weekend.
Cutting is not the problem. Every coral in this hobby including mine came off a bigger piece at some point. The problem is cutting an animal that has not recovered yet.
Fragging is a wound. A healthy colony seals a cut in a few days and encrusts over it in a few weeks. A colony that has been in a bag, then a vat, then another bag, with nothing to eat for two weeks, does not have the energy budget to close a wound and fight off what is living on it at the same time. So the cut sits open. Tissue recedes from the edge instead of growing over it. That is the frag that arrives closed and stays closed.
You can often see it if you know the tell. Fresh-cut plug, no encrusting at all, a colored base that stops dead at the epoxy line, and a piece being sold three days after a shipment landed. That is a chop, not a grow-out.
What a dip is, and what skipping one actually costs
Nothing that comes off a reef comes alone. Acropora carries red bugs and flatworms. Montipora carries the nudibranchs that eat it and lay eggs in the encrusting margin where you will not see them. Zoas carry sundial snails, and the eggs sit in the mat. Almost everything can carry aiptasia, and vermetid snails come in on the rock and the plug.
A dip catches most of the adults. It does not catch eggs, which is why a dip is a step and not a solution. The rest of the answer is time: a period in a system where you can look at the animal, look at it again a week later, and see what hatched.
Volume sellers cannot do that. Not because they are lazy. Because holding an animal for three weeks costs light, food, water, space and rent, and the whole model of a $30 frag depends on the animal being in the building for as short a time as possible. The economics decide it before anyone makes a judgment call.
When it goes wrong it does not go wrong to one coral. Red bugs on one acro become red bugs on every acro. A montipora nudibranch pair will strip a colony you have had for two years. The $30 frag was never the loss. The loss was the eight-year-old colony behind it, and the two months of dosing and dipping and moving rock to get the tank back.

Wild, maricultured, aquacultured: three words that do not mean the same thing
These get used interchangeably on listings and they do not mean the same thing.
Wild. Taken off a reef and sold. It has been through the whole chain above. It may be a magnificent animal. It has also never seen an aquarium before it arrived in yours.
Maricultured. Grown on a rack or a table in the ocean, usually from a fragment cemented to a plug or a piece of substrate. It is farmed, and that is a real distinction that matters for the reef. For your tank, though, it is still an ocean animal that gets collected, bagged, flown and held exactly like a wild one. Maricultured tells you where it grew. It does not tell you anything about the two weeks before it reached you.
Aquacultured. Grown in a closed system on land, under aquarium light, in aquarium water. This is the only one of the three that describes the conditions the animal is currently adapted to.
The reason this matters commercially is that “maricultured” is often written where a buyer will read “captive grown,” and the two words feel similar and mean different things. Neither one is dishonest. But if you are paying a premium because you believe the coral has never been in a bag, check which word you are actually reading.
There is no registry behind any of these terms at the retail level and nobody is auditing listings. The same is true of grade names. “24K Gold” on a torch is a market description, not a registered cultivar, and any vendor can print it on any gold torch. We use the term because it is what the market calls it, not because it certifies anything.
Torch coral is where this bites hardest
If you want one worked example, use torch. More people lose a torch after buying it cheap than almost any other coral in the hobby, and the reason is structural.
Euphyllia has long, fleshy, water-filled polyps and a thin skeleton. That body plan is why people want them and it is exactly what makes them bad travelers. A torch that is bagged expanded gets bruised against its own skeleton for every hour of the trip. Tissue that has been abraded is tissue with an open surface on it.
Then there is brown jelly. It shows up as a fast-moving brown slurry that eats a head in a day or two, and it is associated with ciliate populations exploding on damaged or necrotic tissue. The argument over whether the ciliates are the cause or opportunists is beside the point for a buyer. What is not in dispute is the trigger: injury and stress come first. A torch that arrived bruised, went into a wholesale vat, got fragged four days later and shipped again is a torch carrying several injuries at once.
The tell on a healthy torch is simple and you can check it in a photograph. Polyps extended past the skeleton, not sitting on it. Even color across every head rather than one head pale and pulled. Tissue meeting the skeleton cleanly with no receding line and no exposed white at the base. If a seller can only show you a shot from three feet away with the tips glowing under blue, they are showing you the color and hiding the base.

Handling decides survival more than luck does
There is an old shipping trial that has stuck with me because it is so blunt about how much method matters. The same corals, same trip. Shipped in breathable bags with water, about half arrived alive and another quarter arrived bleached. The same species wrapped in seawater-dampened paper towel and shipped essentially dry came through at 100% over as long as 48 hours.
Same animals. Same distance. The difference was entirely in how somebody packed a box.
That is the whole argument in one line. Coral survival is not weather. It is a series of decisions made by people you never meet, and the price on the listing is downstream of every one of them.
The arithmetic, honestly
Say you want a torch. There is one on a big site for $40 and one from a shop that grew it for $150.
Nobody can tell you the survival rate of a specific listing, and I am not going to invent one. So run it the other way and ask what has to be true for the cheap one to win.
At $40 versus $150, the cheap frag has to survive at better than roughly one in four for the money to come out level. That sounds like an easy bar until you count what “survive” means. Not alive on day three. Alive at six months, opening every day, with a growth edge on it.
And that math ignores the tank. One montipora-eating nudibranch that came in on a $30 frag and took out a colony you cannot replace does not show up in the comparison at all, because you cannot put a number on a coral that took four years and is not for sale anywhere.

The first thirty days, which is when you find out
Whatever you buy and wherever it comes from, the first month is when the decisions made before you got it either show up or do not. Here is what to actually do rather than watch and worry.
Day one. Temperature-acclimate the bag, then get the animal out of the shipping water rather than dripping that water into your display for an hour. Shipping water is a small volume full of mucus and waste, and it has had a day to go bad. Dip in fresh, temperature-matched, parameter-matched water, rinse in a second container, then place.
Place it low and shaded first. Not because everything wants low light, but because a coral that has been in a dark box for 24 hours has no photoprotection left. Give it a week at the bottom and move it up over the following two. The most common way people kill a healthy coral is by putting it straight under the light it will eventually want.
Do not chase parameters at it. A new coral closing up is not a reason to dose anything. Stability beats correction in every case where the numbers are inside a reasonable band. If alkalinity is 8.2 and stable, leave it at 8.2.
Look at the base, not the polyps, every few days. Polyps close for a hundred harmless reasons. Tissue receding off the skeleton at the base is the signal that matters, and it moves in one direction. If you see a white margin appearing where tissue used to be, that is the point to act rather than wait.
Week two is when hitchhikers show themselves. Eggs a dip cannot reach hatch on their own clock. If you are going to see red bugs, montipora nudibranchs or sundials, you will usually see them in the second or third week, not the first. A coral that looked fine on arrival and looks worse on day sixteen is often a pest problem rather than a water problem. If it goes wrong, tell the seller inside their window and with evidence. A photograph of the animal and your alkalinity, salinity and temperature is the difference between a claim and a conversation. Sellers who condition their own stock generally want to know, because a pattern of losses is information they can use.
The cheap listing is rarely the cheap total
Livestock shipping is expensive, it is expensive for everybody, and the way that cost gets presented varies enough that the sticker price is not comparable across sites.
A live animal ships overnight or it does not ship. It needs an insulated box, a heat or cold pack depending on the month, and a breather bag. Those are real costs and they land somewhere: in the coral price, in a shipping line, in a handling fee, or in some combination designed to make one of the three look small.

Before you compare a $40 frag against a $150 one, put both through a cart and look at the number at the bottom. Sometimes the gap closes by half. Sometimes it does not, and then at least you are comparing the real figures.
The group-buy frag and the guy with a tank in his garage
Some of the best corals in this hobby move between hobbyists for cash in a parking lot, and some of the worst pest outbreaks in this hobby arrived exactly the same way.
A private seller is not running a chop shop. What a private seller usually does not have is a quarantine system, because almost nobody sets one up for a hobby tank. So the frag you are buying carries whatever that tank has, and that tank has whatever every frag that ever entered it brought in.
This is not a reason to stop buying from hobbyists. It is a reason to dip everything from a hobbyist exactly as carefully as you would dip an import, and to keep it somewhere you can watch it for a few weeks. The friendliness of the transaction has no bearing on what is living in the coral.
What aquaculture actually changes
“Aquacultured” gets printed on a lot of things loosely, so here is what it means when it means something.
A coral grown in a closed system has never been in a bag on a plane. It has never gone two weeks without food. It has grown at the alkalinity, temperature and light it grew at, which are numbers somebody can tell you, and it has never seen a reef, which also means it never picked up what lives on one.
It also grew slower and cost more to produce, which is the honest reason it is not $30.
The practical difference shows up in the first month. A wild colony has to unlearn the reef and learn your tank. An aquacultured one is already living under aquarium light in aquarium water, so what it has to adjust to is a smaller change. That is not magic and it is not a guarantee. It is one fewer thing stacked against the animal.
How we do it here, so you can hold me to it

Some is not, and when it is not we say so rather than stamping “aquacultured” across everything, because that word means something and using it loosely is how it stopped meaning anything.
- Everything gets dipped. Not as a marketing line. As the thing that happens before an animal joins a system that has other animals in it.
- Everything gets time. A piece goes into our systems and stays there long enough that we have watched it open, close and open again on a normal cycle. A coral we have not seen behave normally does not get a price.
- If it is going backwards, it does not ship. This is the one that costs money and it is the one that matters. A receding coral can be sold. It is easier to put it in a box than to explain to somebody why their order is short. We do not do it.
- Photographed under known lighting. WYSIWYG listings are the animal you get. Where a piece is cut to order from one colony it is labeled “Almost WYSIWYG,” same colony, cut when you order, and we changed those labels so nobody has to guess which is which.
- Shipping is on a schedule for a reason. Livestock goes out UPS Overnight on Tuesdays and Wednesdays only, so nothing is sitting in a facility over a weekend. Live arrival guaranteed.
None of that is exotic. It is what anyone would do who has to look at the animal again next week.
How to judge a seller in about two minutes
You are not going to audit anyone’s supply chain. You do not have to. There are four questions that sort most of it.
Is the photo the animal? A stock image or a colony shot standing in for a frag means nobody photographed what you are buying, which usually means nobody looked at it either.
How long has it been in the building? Ask. A shop that grows or conditions its own stock answers immediately, because it is a fact they know. A shop that cannot answer is telling you the animal arrived recently enough that nobody has watched it.
What is on the plug? Encrusting tissue growing down onto the plug means the coral has been alive and healthy somewhere for weeks. A clean cut against bare epoxy means it was fragged recently, which tells you nothing on its own, but combined with a shipment that landed on Tuesday it tells you plenty.
What happens if it dies? Live arrival guarantees are standard and mean less than people think, because most losses show up on day five, not on arrival. The more useful question is whether the seller wants to know. Somebody who asks for a photo and a parameter set is running a business where that information is worth something to them.
The part I will not oversell
A conditioned coral from a careful seller can still die in your tank. Alkalinity swinging a full point burns tips regardless of where the animal came from. A heater that sticks will kill a $400 colony as fast as a $30 frag. Nothing on this page is a substitute for stable water, and anyone implying otherwise is selling you comfort.
What buying carefully does is remove the variables that were decided before the box got to you. It does not remove the ones in your own tank. Those are still yours, and they are the ones worth getting boring.
