Description

You are buying the exact coral in the photo — a Frankenstein Wagon Wheel mushroom photographed under blue spectrum reef lighting. The disc is covered in dense, branching tentacle clusters that fire a hard emerald and lime green, broken up by scattered patches of tangerine and gold where the pigment shifts, and the whole field sits over a deep teal-blue base that reads almost black between the clusters. A skirt of stubby magenta-pink tentacles rings the outer edge and frames the green. conditioned in our Key West systems, Florida.

About Wagon Wheel Mushrooms (Rhodactis sp.)

Wagon Wheel is the name given to Rhodactis morphs whose tentacle clusters radiate out from the mouth in distinct spokes rather than covering the disc evenly, and the “Frankenstein” designation marks the ones that layer a hard green fluorescence over a contrasting skirt. They are among the easiest corals in the hobby to keep and among the harder ones to source in high-grade color, since the striking morphs propagate slowly and are usually held back by the shops that have them. This piece was grown out in Key West on stable parameters and is already conditioned to captive light and flow.

Care Guide

Undemanding and forgiving — a strong choice for a lower-light spot that needs a jolt of color.

• Lighting: Low to medium — PAR 50–150. Wagon Wheels hold their green fluorescence best under modest blue-heavy light.
• Flow: Low — gentle indirect movement so the disc can expand fully.
• Placement: Sandbed or shaded lower rockwork. Once it grips, leave it alone.
• Feeding: Low to medium — largely photosynthetic, but small meaty foods or coral powder once or twice a week speeds growth and splitting.
• Aggression: Peaceful, though it will slowly crowd immediate neighbors as the disc expands.
• Water Parameters: Temp 76–78°F, salinity 1.025–1.026, Alk 8–9 dKH, Ca 420–440, Mg 1300–1400. Stability matters more than exact numbers.
