The Red Spiny Sea Star is a hardy, slow-moving echinoderm prized for its rusty-orange color and spiny textured arms. It’s an excellent scavenger, patrolling the sand bed and live rock for detritus, uneaten food, and organic film — a great addition to a mature reef’s cleanup crew.
Care Guide
- Lighting: Not light-dependent; any standard reef lighting is fine.
- Flow: Low to moderate — needs calm areas to move freely across rock and sand.
- Placement: Established reef tank with sand bed and live rock; requires a mature tank with adequate detritus/film algae to graze.
- Feeding/Nutrients: Primarily scavenges detritus and film algae; supplement with sinking pellets or frozen mysis in low-detritus systems.
- Aggression/Reef Safe: 100% reef safe — will not bother corals, fish, or most inverts.
- Water Parameters: Stable reef parameters required — Temp 76-78°F, pH 8.1-8.4, Salinity 1.024-1.026. Sensitive to rapid parameter swings and copper-based medications.
