Acropora is the summit of the hobby — the most demanding coral most people will ever keep, and the one whose colors and growth forms reward the effort. One identifying feature separates an acro from every other genus: an axial corallite at the tip of each branch, larger than the radial corallites along the sides. The pale growing tip on a healthy piece is that structure laying down new skeleton, and watching those tips extend week over week is the payoff.

Acros do not forgive drift. They want mature water, stable alkalinity, real light and real flow, and they respond to a parameter swing faster than anything else in the tank. If your torches and hammers have been stable for six months, you are ready. If the tank is four months old, buy a montipora first — same SPS growth habit, far more forgiveness.
