Description
Pulsating Xenia (Xenia sp.) is the soft coral that never sits still. Each feathery polyp opens and closes in a steady pumping rhythm, so a healthy colony looks like it is breathing.
Choose a frag to start one in your tank, or a colony for instant movement. The photo shows our xenia under blue actinic light. Color looks different under full-spectrum lighting.
Xenia is one of the easiest corals to keep and one of the fastest growing. That speed is the one thing to plan for: it spreads across rock by creeping and dropping new stalks, so give it its own rock or an island where it can grow without crowding slower corals. Conditioned in our Key West systems.
Care Guide
- Lighting: Low to medium — PAR 75–150. Acclimate gradually after shipping.
- Flow: Low to medium. Gentle, indirect flow lets the polyps pulse. Strong direct flow can make them stop.
- Placement: Its own rock or an isolated spot, lower to middle rockwork.
- Compatibility: Not aggressive, but it can overgrow nearby corals. Keep it away from rock you want to keep clear.
- Feeding: No target feeding needed. Xenia does well in tanks with steady nutrients and regular water changes.
Stable salinity, temperature and alkalinity keep the pulsing strong. A colony that stops pulsing is usually telling you something changed in the water.
