Description
A sea hare is what you reach for when hair algae has taken a tank over and the snails are losing. They graze it hard and they will strip a rock in days rather than weeks.
Here is the part nobody tells you at the point of sale: once the algae is gone, a sea hare has nothing left to eat, and it starves. Treat it as a treatment, not a permanent resident, and have a plan for where it goes when the job is done. That might be a friend with a problem tank, or a refugium with enough growth to keep it fed.
Two practical notes. Cover or screen your pump and powerhead intakes before you add one, because a sea hare that gets pulled into an impeller is a bad day for the whole tank. And they can release a purple ink if they are badly harassed, so give it a calm tank and do not manhandle it.
