Description

Five distinct colors are present across a single large polyp: explosive neon green base tissue, electric blue bubble tentacles, bold orange and red outer ring, and golden yellow accent markings at the center. This level of color complexity is what separates a Master Scoly from everything else on the market.

About Scolymia (Homophyllia australis)

Scolymia — recently reclassified as Homophyllia australis — is one of the most iconic and highly sought-after corals in the reef hobby. Known as Doughnut Corals, Button Corals, or simply Scolys, these solitary polyp LPS corals originate primarily from Australia and are prized for their extraordinary tissue fluorescence and color variety. Unlike most corals, Scolymia cannot be propagated — each specimen is a unique, irreplaceable individual — which is why high-quality specimens command serious prices and hold their value in the collector market.

Master Scolys — specimens displaying five or more distinct colors with strong fluorescence across the entire disc — represent the absolute pinnacle of the hobby’s most coveted coral. This specimen qualifies without question.

This is a large, fully expanded specimen in excellent health. It has been held and conditioned in our system, is actively feeding, and is displaying full, vibrant color expression. A once-in-a-while piece.

Care Guide

Scolymia is a hardy, forgiving coral well suited to intermediate reefers. Its primary needs are stable water chemistry, low to moderate flow, and consistent feeding.

• Lighting: Low to Medium — PAR 50–150. Scolymia prefers indirect or diffused light. Avoid placing directly under intense lighting which can cause bleaching.
• Flow: Low to Moderate — gentle indirect flow. Strong direct flow will cause the polyp to retract.
• Placement: Bottom tank on sand or stable rockwork in a low-flow area.
• Feeding: Feed meaty foods (mysis shrimp, Reef-Roids, LPS pellets) 2–3 times per week. Scolymia are active feeders and respond well to target feeding — turn off flow during feeding for best results.
• Aggression: Low to Moderate — maintain 3–4″ of space from neighboring corals.
• Water Parameters: Temp 76–80°F | Salinity 1.025–1.026 | dKH 8–10 | Ca 400–450 | Mg 1250–1350 | Nitrate 5–10ppm
