About Red Dragon’s Breath (Halymenia durvillei)

Dragon’s Breath is prized as a display macroalgae, not just a refugium filler. Its intense red-to-magenta fluorescence makes it a genuine showpiece in a reef tank — many keepers grow it right in the display for color. It is slower growing and more sought-after than common macros, and cultured stock like ours adapts far better to aquarium life than wild-collected material.

Like other macroalgae it also contributes to nutrient export, drawing nitrate and phosphate from the water column as it grows.

Care Guide

Easy to keep with the right light and gentle handling — treat it as a display specimen.

  • Lighting: Moderate — strong blue-spectrum reef light brings out the deepest fluorescent red. Too much intense white light can bleach it.
  • Flow: Low to moderate — gentle, indirect flow keeps the fronds open without tearing the delicate tissue.
  • Placement: Wedge the base into rockwork in the display or refugium where it gets good light and gentle current.
  • Nutrients: Photosynthetic — feeds on the nitrate and phosphate already in your water. No dosing required.
  • Grazing caution: Tangs, angelfish, and other aggressive herbivores may eat it — consider your stocking before placing it in the display.
  • Reef-safe: Completely — no stings, no aggression, non-invasive.
  • Water Parameters: Temp 76–78°F, salinity 1.023–1.026. Stability matters more than exact numbers.
