Corals and fish can’t tell you when something’s drifting out of range โ by the time you can see a problem, it’s usually already been building for days or weeks. Testing is the only real window you have into what’s actually happening in your water, and how often you test matters just as much as what you’re testing for. Skip weeks at a time and you’re not maintaining a reef tank, you’re just hoping.

Why Testing Frequency Matters More Than Any Single Reading
A single test result is just a snapshot โ it tells you almost nothing on its own. What actually matters is the trend: is alkalinity slowly drifting down week over week, or has it been rock steady for a month? Parameters that degrade gradually are the most dangerous, because corals often acclimate to the slow change right up until they can’t anymore, and then it looks like a sudden crash even though it was building the whole time. Frequent testing is what lets you catch that drift while it’s still a two-minute fix instead of an emergency.
What to Test and How Often
- Alkalinity: 2โ3 times per week in coral-heavy and SPS-dominant tanks, weekly minimum otherwise. It’s the most volatile major parameter and the one most likely to swing fast.
- Calcium: Weekly to biweekly, more often if you’re running a calcium reactor or dosing two-part.
- Magnesium: Every 1โ2 weeks. It doesn’t move as fast as alkalinity or calcium, but low magnesium makes both of those harder to keep stable.
- Nitrate & Phosphate: Weekly, or 2โ3 times per week while dialing in a new tank or troubleshooting an algae issue.
- Salinity: Weekly, and any time you do a water change or top off manually.
- pH & Temperature: Ongoing via a controller or probe if you have one; spot-check manually at least weekly if you don’t.
New Tanks vs. Established Tanks
A newer tank should be tested more often across the board โ parameters haven’t settled into a predictable pattern yet, and you’re still learning how your specific system behaves. As a tank matures and you can reliably predict what a test is going to show before you run it, you can stretch out the interval on the more stable parameters. But “established” doesn’t mean “set it and forget it” โ livestock changes, a new light schedule, a dosing pump running dry, or a heavier feeding routine can all knock a stable tank off track, and the only way you’ll catch it early is if you’re still testing.
Hobby Test Kits vs. ICP Testing
Hobby-grade test kits (Hanna checkers, Salifert, API, and similar) are perfectly capable of telling you whether a parameter is in range, and they’re what you’ll use week to week. ICP testing sends a water sample to a lab for a much more detailed breakdown, including trace elements hobby kits can’t measure at all โ useful periodically, especially if something is off and you can’t pin down why. The results between different ICP labs don’t always agree with each other, so the real value isn’t in chasing lab-perfect accuracy โ it’s in picking one method (a specific test kit or a specific ICP lab) and sticking with it, so your results are at least consistent with each other over time.
Why Alkalinity Swings Are the Most Dangerous
Alkalinity is the parameter most worth testing often, because it’s also the one that does the most damage when it swings. Corals use it directly to build their skeletons, and a rapid change โ even within what looks like a “safe” range โ can trigger tissue necrosis, poor polyp extension, color loss, or bleaching in SPS especially. LPS tend to pull back and lose fullness under the same stress. The danger isn’t usually the number itself; it’s how fast it moved to get there. Testing alkalinity multiple times a week is what lets you correct a drift gradually instead of discovering a swing after the damage is already done.
Keep a Log โ Trends Matter More Than Any One Number
A single test result floating in isolation doesn’t tell you much. A log โ even a simple spreadsheet โ turns individual numbers into a trend you can actually act on, and lets you connect a shift in parameters to what caused it: a water change, a new light schedule, a feeding change, a piece of equipment that’s slipping. The best reef keepers aren’t the ones with perfect numbers, they’re the ones who know their tank’s normal pattern well enough to notice immediately when something’s off.
The Bottom Line
Test alkalinity most often, keep a regular rhythm on calcium, magnesium, nitrate, and phosphate, and don’t let “established” become an excuse to stop testing. Log what you find so a single number turns into a trend you can actually use.
